In just few weeks after Simon Munde, Executive Director for Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA), had been appointed as commissioner of National peace & Unity, 18 December, become another historical moment in disability fraternity as Munde joined rest of the newly appointed commissioners to take oath of office marking the begining of a long way of enhancing the promotion of peace and unity in the country.
Swearing in of Munde, a person with disability, signifies the committment the country has in championing inclusion of persons with disabilities in public space and this development has come in just a week after he emerged the winer of Inclusive Human Rights Defender of the year as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating Human Rights Day in December.
Speaking during the swearing in ceremony that took place at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, president Lazarus Chakwera challenged commissioners to be the champions of peace and unity in the country.
"We want peace to continue prevailing in this country and it is our hope that you will help enhancing the promotion of peace and unity", he narrated.
On 2 December, 2023 president chakwera appointed 8 commissioners ans 3 ex-officios m and they have been sworn in the first ever cohort of National Peace & Unity Commission that will oversee the promotion of peace and unity in the country.
